HISTORY
Founded in Shanghai in 1896 as the Nanyang Public College,Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China.Its initial foucus was on educating talented young people in the fields of Law and politics,diplomacy,industry and commerce.And by the turn of the 20th century,its engineering program was one of most advanced in China,with the characteristic of equal emphasis on engineering education and humanities education.It was among the first Chinese universities to offer specializations in electric engineering,mechanical engineering, civil engineering and management, and its programs in those fields were at top level.
By 1921,it had become jiaotong(Chiao-Tung) University,and included the following Schools and departments: School of Science, School of Electrical Engineering,school of Mechanical Engineering,School of Civil Engineering, School of Managementy, Department of Chinese, Department of Foreign Languages, and Institue of Industrial Research.with iots highly respected programs in sciense, engineering and management,Jiaotong University came to be known as the “MIT of the East”. Throughout China ,people regarded Tsinghua University in the north and Jiaotong University in the south as the paragons of excellence in Chinese higher education.With its fame spread far and wide,many renowned scholars joined the faculty and talented young students dreamed of studying in its lecture halls.
In 1956,The state council of China made a momentous decision to move the university from Shanghai to Western China.The majority of departments and faculties and students gradually resettled in Xi’an over a period of two years, serving as the pioneers in the “Grand Development of Western China” program and helping to forge the “Spirit of West Movement”, which was noted for its commitment to achievement in hardships.In 1959, the university was officially named Xi’an Jiaotong University and include among the 16 key universities of China. During the National Seventh and Eighth five-Year Plans, the university was on the list of “National Key Construction Project”. In the late 1990’s,it was among the first group of universities selected for the participation in both”Project 211” and “Project 985”. And was designated by national government as on of the elite groups of the country’s universities that should be developed into world –class universities. In april 2000,with the approval of the State council of China, the university merged with the former Xi’an Medical University(then administrated by the Ministry of Health) and the former Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics( then administrated by the Peoples’s Bank of China), and thereby entered a new era in its history.
Today, Xi’an Jiaotong University passed the key construction of national “Seventh Five-Year Plan” “Eighth Five-Year Plan”,”211 Project” and “985 Project”. It has developed into a university that has the feature of science and Engineering and covers 9 subjects such as science, engineering medicine, economics, management, art and law. It has become an important base that is the integration of talents training, scientific research and social services and propels the social development
